Jessie Lipscomb took this picture of a Cecropia Moth at our home in the Elon area. It was resting on the drive in the area below a vapor light. We did some research and learned it is a giant silkworm moth. These moths often have a 6 - 7 inch wingspan and include the largest moths in North America. They are attracted to lights from ballparks or parking lots where they find mates. Sometimes they can be found early in the mornings resting beneath such lights.
